Spiritually Homesteading | How to Lose Your Religion & Keep Your Jesus
Most faith podcasts will tell you what to believe. This one helps you figure out how to build.
Spiritually Homesteading exists for the spiritually curious, the quietly disillusioned, and the stubbornly hopeful. The people who got honest about their faith and ended up with more questions than answers. The ones who left the church, or stayed and felt alone in it. The ones who still feel something pulling them toward God but don't know what to do with that feeling anymore.
This podcast is not about de-converting. This is about what comes next: the slower, harder, more rewarding work of rebuilding a faith that actually belongs to you. Not inherited. Not performed. Not borrowed from someone else's certainty and rules.
Think of it like tending a homestead. Nothing grows overnight. Nothing grows without effort. But when you put your own hands in the soil and tend something with intention, it becomes yours in a way that nobody can take from you.
That's what we're building here. Episode by episode. Together.
If you've been hurt by the church but haven't lost your hunger for truth...Welcome home.

What did Jesus actually stand for? As Tolstoy said, the message of Jesus really isn't complicated—but the church, religious institutions, and humanity have overcomplicated it. In this episode, we get back to basics.
Jesus taught three core principles that encompass everything: Love God, love others as yourself, and serve others before yourself. That's it. Really.
We explore the vineyard parable where a landowner sent messenger after messenger—all killed—before finally sending his son. This reveals why Jesus came: not as a brutal sacrifice to satisfy divine wrath, but to personally embody what God has been trying to tell us all along.
Love God means making God your identity system instead of reaching for capitalism's illusions. Advertising doesn't sell products—it sells false identities. You're not buying a car; you're buying the image of success. When God becomes our source of identity, we stop falling into worldly traps.
Love others as yourself creates accountability. If you want grace, extend grace. If you want mercy, show mercy. Treat people the way you want God to treat you.
Serve others first embodies the "superhero mentality"—always looking for ways to save, support, and encourage others, even at personal expense.
Jesus frustrated the Pharisees because they loved their laws more than the people those laws were meant to protect. Sound familiar? We're quick to be offended without considering intentions. We police everyone's behavior instead of monitoring our own.
If we all focused on our own words and actions, many of our political and social problems would disappear.

Satan isn't in the Bible. At least not the way you think. The horned figure with a pitchfork ruling over hell? That's a medieval invention, not biblical teaching.
In this episode, we explore what the Hebrew word "satan" actually meant to the original audience of the Old Testament. Instead of a proper name for the embodiment of evil, "satan" simply meant "adversary" or "opponent"—someone or something working against you.
This completely changes how we read familiar passages. In the book of Job, "the satan" isn't the devil battling God; it's a divine authority figure testing Job spiritually. The serpent in Genesis wasn't a talking snake that should have alarmed Eve; it was understood as a divine or magical being from another realm, which is why conversation with it seemed normal.
We discuss why reading ancient Jewish texts with modern Christian theology makes us miss essential meaning, how the concept of Satan evolved over centuries, and what Jesus might have actually meant when he told Peter "Get behind me, Satan."
This isn't about diminishing faith. It's about reading Scripture the way it was meant to be read and understanding what the original audience believed versus what church tradition has taught us.

Jesus was Jewish. This isn't symbolic or metaphorical—Jesus was fully, authentically Jewish. So why have we separated Christ from his cultural and religious roots?
In this episode, we tackle why Jesus's Jewishness matters for understanding the Bible. From Judd Apatow's confusion about seeing Jesus in a spiritual vision ("I'm Jewish—why would I see Jesus?") to our cultural habit of depicting Jesus as European, we've lost sight of essential context.
Jesus lived in the Middle East. He would have looked more like an Indian or Arab person than the pale, blue-eyed depictions in churches. But beyond physical appearance, his entire worldview, teaching methods, and mission were rooted in Jewish tradition. He was a Rabbi. He taught in synagogues. He observed Jewish festivals. He fulfilled Jewish messianic prophecies.
We explore why Christianity didn't create Jesus—Judaism did. Jesus existed because of the covenant with Abraham and the promises made to the Jewish people. Understanding this transforms how we read Scripture, interpret parables, and grasp Jesus's confrontations with religious leaders.
If you want to read the Bible more accurately and understand Christ more fully, you need to reclaim the Jewishness of Jesus.

Deconstruction vs. deconversion—they're not the same thing, but people use these terms interchangeably all the time. If you're questioning your faith, understanding the difference matters.
Deconstruction means taking apart your beliefs to understand them better, to separate truth from tradition. It's like deconstructing a salad—you identify each ingredient (kale, goat cheese, grilled chicken, pickled onions) to understand what makes it delicious. You're not rejecting the salad; you're learning what's essential versus what's just garnish.
Deconversion is different. It's the process of leaving faith entirely. You're not examining beliefs to refine them—you're dismantling them because you no longer believe. You're quitting.
As a millennial, I've watched every institution I was told to trust fail spectacularly: the church, government, healthcare systems, financial industries. We were taught to fall in line and trust authority, but these systems—run by flawed humans—have let us down repeatedly. This creates a crisis: Can we put our hope in traditions just because "that's how we've always done it"?
These questions drive deconstruction. We're not abandoning faith—we're trying to figure out what's actually true versus what's institutional baggage.
We explore the philosophy behind deconstruction (Jacques Derrida), why Christianity didn't create Jesus (it was created IN RESPONSE to Jesus), and the irony of people calling something deconstruction when it's actually something else.
Deconstruction assumes there's something worth keeping—you're refining, not rejecting. When you're ready to walk away entirely, that's deconversion. Both journeys are valid, but honesty about which path you're walking matters.
Are you deconstructing—seeking clarity within faith? Or deconverting—seeking departure from faith? Know which path you're on.

Is God a man? It's a question most Christians avoid, but the answer matters more than you think—especially for people who've been hurt by earthly fathers.
In this episode, we tackle why Christianity has spent centuries emphasizing God's masculinity and what that means for people seeking authentic connection with the divine. We explore how the word "Father" can be comforting for some and traumatic for others, and why God intentionally uses both paternal and maternal imagery throughout Scripture.
You'll discover that God describes himself as mother in the Old Testament, that Jesus takes on the role of bridegroom while believers are the bride, and that God transcends human gender categories entirely. God is neither male nor female—and somehow embodies the fullest expression of both.
If thinking of God as exclusively male creates distance in your relationship with the divine, this episode offers permission to explore maternal or gender-neutral imagery. Because God wants connection, not conformity to outdated linguistic conventions.
Perfect for anyone deconstructing faith, wrestling with patriarchal church structures, or simply curious about the gender of God.

What does biblical manhood really mean? In this episode, we strip away the complexity and get to the heart of what Jesus actually taught about masculinity.
Biblical manhood isn't about toxic masculinity or cultural stereotypes—it's about three core principles: love God, love others as you love yourself, and serve others before yourself. We explore how consumerism tries to sell us false identities, why the Golden Rule creates powerful accountability, and what servant leadership actually looks like.
Drawing from Jesus's interactions with the Pharisees, we discuss how rules became more important than people—and how we're making the same mistakes today in our political and social environments.
If you're seeking clarity on biblical manhood without the cultural baggage, this episode offers a refreshingly simple framework rooted in Christ's teachings.
